REsearch proposalInarguably, concerns and attempts for solving environmental problems had been mentioned widespreadly. Some of the major issues that we had been heard frequently are pollutants and global warming. Surprisingly, recent researches shows that animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, livestock industries have been growing due to higher demands for food. Accordingly, meat production doesn’t only have various effects on environmental issues, but also, effects human health issues. On our research, we’ve chosen 5 relating topics: deforestations - uses of pesticides - uses of hormones - emissions of greenhouse gases and human health issues. Deforestation is one of the issues that the world are facing. Researchers claims that forests were cleared and used for industrial and agriculture activities(such as farming , building and mining). Additionally , deforestation also cause many other environmental problems. Secondly, huge amount pesticides are widely used by farmers in order to have better crops. Therefore, those crops are being used as livestock food, and chemicals remains within the meat product, which ended up to be eaten by humans. Also, artificial growth hormones had been injected to farm animals to speed up their growth rate. As same as pesticides, chemicals from these hormones remains within the meat product. The meat producing industries also emits huge amount of greenhouse gases such as methane, nitrous, and carbon dioxide. Where methane could be 25-100 times more destructive than carbon dioxide. However, it is the issues that government try to refused because it could have bad impact on farming business. Lastly, from all that mentioned above, meat industries have direct effect on human health. Meat products contains toxic chemicals due to the artificial chemicals that had been added to the process. Reflection: We’ve picked out 5 relating topics: -Deforestation to create grassland for grazing cows (Peem) -Overuse of pesticides for crops like wheat, corn, and soybeans (Ming) -Overuse of growth hormones and impacts on animals and/or humans (First) -Methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxides released in farming and relationship to climate change (Tent) -Human health issues from meat, pesticides, and pollution of soil, water, air (Ming - Peem) Meat producing industries do need huge spaces, as a result, we deforested in order to gain that. Also, livestock release huge amount of greenhouse gases such as Methane, Carbon Dioxide and Nitrous Oxide. As livestock needs food, we uses crops such as soybeans and corns. Although, pesticides are used in those crop for preventing pests. Similarly, growth hormones are used in cow to speeds up its growth rate. Resulting as these toxic chemicals ended up in humans and affected humans in many ways. =============================================================== 03/05/18 Goals: To know brief information about pesticides: What are pesticides? What are some types of pesticides? Reflection: According to Naveen Kumar, pesticides are substances or mixture of substances that used to prevent, destroy, repel and mitigate pests. However, pesticides are considered as all “crops-protecting product”, but actually, they can be classified into three categories(Herbicides, Insecticides and Fungicides) Herbicides are used to kill and control weeds (unwanted plants). Insecticides are used to kill pests and unwanted insects. Fungicide are used to kill fungus, which fungus are the major causes of disease on plant. Additionally, I would like to search deeper into each types of pesticides. And to look up different effect on each type of pesticides. Sources: What are pesticides (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/jenny-dewey-rohrich/what-are-pesticides-and-w_b_5662370.html) =============================================================== 04/05/18 Goals: To be able to know ways the pesticide could get into human body To be able to know impacts of the pesticides on human body Reflection: After researches, I found that there was a term for getting pesticides in or on the body , pesticides exposure. However, humans can receive pesticides in many ways, Oral Exposure(Mouth), Inhalation(Breath), Ocular(eyes), Dermal(Skin). Where the toxic effects can depends concentration and duration of exposure with the pesticides, with the following equation: Hazard = Toxicity * Exposure However, I am very sleepy today, so I couldn’t accomplished my goals. I would make it up on the next lesson. Reflection: The toxicity of particular pesticides could be tested/measured by laboratory animals such as rats, cats or dogs. And also, testing with artificial tissues, by applying different amounts of ingredients. These tests can ensure and estimate the risks of effects that could caused by the particular pesticides. However, different peoples had difference effect to particular pesticides. Some people could have severe effects, while some had mild to no effects. The effect of pesticide could be classified into 3 categories: Acute Effects - Delayed Effects - Allergic Effects. Acute Effect are illness or injuries that will occurs immediately after exposure with pesticide. Delayed Effects, or Chronic Effect, are illness or injuries that will not occurs immediately after exposure with pesticides. Delayed effects could occur in both single exposure and repeated exposure. Allergic Effects are some symptoms that only occurred in only some group of peoples(not every one). It can be very mild or even very severe. However, I noticed that these effects from pesticides are mainly for peoples who had direct contact/exposure with pesticides, such as farmers, and not consumer. I need to find more information about secondary consuming of pesticides, and also, needed to find more reliable data and numbers. Sources: Harmful effects of pesticides 2 (http://pest.ca.uky.edu/EXT/ukgh/Exposure.pdf) Global pesticide consumption (buying rate) (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/228841853_Global_pesticide_consumption_and_pollution_With_China_as_a_focus) =============================================================== 10/05/18 Goals: -To focus on Lecture -To research on the effects of pesticides on the environment Reflection: Today is based on lecturing, the topic discussed in class is pesticide. I learned that pesticide are categorized widely into 2 groups : selective pesticides and broad-spectrum pesticides. Selective pesticides only kills specific type of pests ( Herbicides , Insecticides , Fungicide) Broad-spectrum pesticides effects many types of pests, including beneficial pests (DDT was an example of this). Also, pesticides had many advantages and disadvantages. Advantages including kill pests that spread diseases and prevent crop loss. Disadvantages including to kill beneficial pests , pollute environments , harm human/organisms. Also, pesticides are more widely used and getting more dangerous nowadays Bioaccumulation: -Organisms consume pesticides -Body can’t break down pesticide or takes very long time. -Pesticide concentration builds up in the body. Biomagnification: -According to 10% law, species in higher trophic levels receive more pesticides. However, with a short period of time, I didn’t have time to research on my topic, so I didn’t accomplished my goals. =============================================================== 11/05/18 Goals: To continue research on the effects of pesticides on the environment(how it disturbs the biodiversity) Reflection: I found out that pesticides had various effects on the environment including: -Biodiversity Destruction -Erosion -Global Warming -Soil water depletion -Water quality -Oxygen depletion -CO2 emission -Air quality -Vegetation disruption Although, I need to research deeper into each topics. Sources: http://farhanwarsi.tripod.com/id9.html https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2984095/ =============================================================== 15/05/18 Goals: -To focus on Lecture -To continue research on the effects of pesticides on the environment(how it disturbs the biodiversity) and look deeper in detail Reflection: Today is based on lecturing, and we still discuss on pesticides effects on environmental problems. I learned that animals on high trophic level such as pelican or eagles are affected by DDT ,resulting as, weak egg shell and almost became extinct. Biomagnification also harms human health because human consume both plant and meats that was grown with pesticide And most importantly, pesticides doesn’t actually prevent crop loss ,although , cost huge of amount of money for health care/ environmental problems. However, with short amount of time at the end of the class, i didn’t accomplished my goals. Although, we had discussed on planning the booklet and relating all the topics together. I noticed that there were not much time left, so I need to hurry on my researching section. =============================================================== 18/05/18 Goals: To wrap up all the informations and summarize it. Reflection: After I summarized all the information, I found some missing informations. Some statement aren’t clear, and most of the information are not related together. I research for more information and found of this research paper about pesticides. I contains most of the information I needed. Source: Pesticides threats (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/286042190_Effects_of_Pesticides_on_Environment) =============================================================== 21/05/18 Goal: To be able to have good grades on the quiz ( We have quiz today) Reflection: We have a quiz today, so I didn’t have any progress on the work. =============================================================== 22/05/18 Goals: To be able to remember the rubrics. Reflection: As same as yesterday, today is a review for the quiz. Although, for the last ten minutes of the class, we discussed on drafting and arranging the booklet. =============================================================== 25/05/18 Goals: To draft out the whole booklet (drafting on the layouts) Reflection: We wasted half of the class arguing for the topic of the booklet. And finally got a name that everyone satisfied with , “This Thing Worth 25% Of Our Final Project Grade”. I decided that the order of the topics should be: Deforestation , Methane Emissions , Usage of Pesticides , Growth Hormones and Human Health Issues. I suggested that the booklet should be square and we concluded to have 10 pages. =============================================================== 28/05/18 Goals: To arrange and format all information and texts. Reflection: I noticed that information in the booket should be short, clear and understandable. By that, I trimmed down most of the information. Also, I checked my groupmate work and edit it. The whole period was wasted to editing grammars and deleting unnecessary informations. =============================================================== 30/05/18 Goals: Attach all pictures and informations into the booklet Reflection: Today was the due date for the booklet, and luckily, the due date moved to next week. The booklet cover and raw pages are finished, but didn’t have any information on it. We spent most of the time this class attaching pre-printed textboxes and pictures. We noticed almost at the end of the class that we completely forgot about bibliography. So we take last 10 minute of the class making one. =============================================================== BookletPersonal ways to show learningReflectionsFor the final quarter of the Environmental Science Class, we are doing a final group project instead of exams. The projects aims for students to create a informative booklet on environmental issues caused by meat industries. I worked in a group of 4 including me, Tent , Peem (Peempanot) and First. We decided to choose 5 topics ; Deforestations, Emissions of Greenhouse Gases, Uses of Pesticides , Uses of Growth Hormones and Human Health issues. The topic I choose the research individually is the use of pesticides. There are in-class time for researching for the topics. Learning record forms and work logs are needed to be filled daily in order to track my progress.
From my researches, Pesticides are substances or mixture of substances that used to prevent, destroy, repel and mitigate pests. Although, pesticides could be classify into selective pesticides (effects only on specific pests: herbicides, insecticides, fungicide) and broad-spectrum pesticides (effects on wide-variety of pests). Pesticide cannot be broken down by the body (or takes very long time), as a result, the toxins are building up inside fat tissues, this is called Bioaccumulation. And as every species relies on the food chains, the pesticide toxins concentration gradually increases in higher trophic levels, this is called biomagnification. As cows are fed by crops with pesticide, humans consume even more amount of pesticides, due to biomagnification and bioaccumulation. Pesticide toxins in the body could causes several health issues including ; cancer and tumors - brain and nervous system damages - birth defects - infertility and reproductive problems - damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs and other Body organs or the disruption of the endocrine system ( hormone systems ). At first, I thought that pesticides are not "that big" or "that concerning" problems. Although, after the researches, I think that pesticides should have be banned. They have effects on the environment, ecosystems and also human health. Alternative ways of repelling pests could had been use instead of pesticides(for example, natural pest enemies). Besides the knowledge for environmental issues, this final project teaches me many things. Even work logs helped me on tracking time and progress, though, due to my bad time management, I wasted most of the time researching rather than making the booklet. I rushed on making the booklet on the last day before due date. And also, I prefers individuals work rather than group work, so most of the time, I did all of the the booklet all by myself. That was much more work than I expected, and I needed to learned to assigning work to my group mates. The project also helped me to accomplished strategic learners. Because of the evaluations and critical thinking efforts on the project. I also learned to be innovative thinkers on being creative and original.

DescriptionTheory of natural selection was a theory developed by Charles Darwin, where organisms that best adapted to their environment tends to survive better and inherit to the next generation. I was assigned to make a comic on the development of Darwin's natural selection theory. But the comic must be only 10 boxes and each box can only have 3 words. ReflectionThis assignment teaches and improves me in many ways. I need to plan out the whole thing before actually drawing it down. I also have hard time to try to fit the whole history into only 10 boxes of comic. But the most challenging thing for me is that each box can only have three words. Which means that I must express ideas in terms of arts and creativeness not words. For me, I think that this assingment helps me on being innovative thinker and strategic learner. After all, I am very impressed with my work, although, I think that there are rooms for improvments that I can do better.
In Environmental Science Class, we are studying about threats that threaten the world biodiversity. There are 6 threats, habitat loss, invasive species, population, climate change, and overexploitation (HIPPCO). This assignment is to research one given topics from HIPPCO, and present to the class. My group was assigned to research for POPULATION From the assignment, we learn that the majority of changes in diversity are cause by human. Which also means that while our population are growing up, we consume more and destroy everything. Therefore, group working in this project teaches be a Leaders of the future. I assigned work for every one in the group equally. Also, there are some difference in ideas and misconception, but as a group, we solve these problems by listening and understanding each other. In this assignment, I was assigned to work with a friend to create a poster. We must adapt an alien's properties for living in the Earth in certain conditions and certain limitations, which, we got grassland. Several body parts of our aliens had been adapt, such as, size reduction of the eyes, to reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the eyes.
This project teaches me to be an innovative thinkers, where I build on creative and original ideas, but still related to given limitations. We work together by sharing ideas and reasonings of each others. Sometimes our ideas were not in the same track, so we use reasonings and explanations for each other to understand. In this project, my group was assigned to create a poster about "THE ROCK CYCLE". Which show the cycles of rocks ,changing into 3 difference types of rocks [igneous rock, sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock]through different processes. And each type of rock has their own properties.
Such as igneous rock, igneous rock was created by the cool down of magma or lava, and from that, igneous rocks seemed to have air holes. We spent a lot of time designing our poster. We wanted our poster to be as simple and understandable as possible. We use simple arrows and explain the process. This project helped me to be "Innovative Thinkers". Because our group must cooperate together with reasonings and creativeness. And as a final result, I am very proud with the overall of this poster. |
